The DIRECTV Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:DTV) today reported that third quarter 2009 revenues increased 10% to $5.47 billion, operating profit before depreciation and amortization1 (OPBDA) increased 8% to $1.35 billion while operating profit increased 4% to $685 million compared to last year’s third quarter. Third quarter net income attributable to The DIRECTV Group increased slightly to $366 million while diluted earnings per share increased 12% to $0.37 compared with the same period last year.

DIRECTV takes television straight to the masses - no wires attached. The company operates the largest direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service in the US, ahead of #2 DISH Network, and in direct competition with cable providers Comcast and Time Warner. It provides service to more than 17 million customers in the US and another 5 million or so through its Latin America division. Additionally, regional US phone companies such as Verizon bundle DIRECTV video services with their voice and Internet packages. The company also offers high-definition and video-on-demand (VOD) programming.
