By the numbers: The U.S. wireless industry's economic impact
CTIA SmartBrief | May 25, 2012
The U.S. wireless industry is the engine of U.S. economic growth, according to a report by Recon Analytics analyst and founder Roger Entner. In the report, Entner found that the U.S. wireless industry directly or indirectly supports 3.8 million jobs, or 2.6% of all U.S. employment; contributes $195.5 billion to the U.S. GDP; and drove $33 billion in productivity improvements in 2011. If an additional 500 MHz of spectrum is made available, per the National Broadband Plan, the U.S. economy and Americans would benefit from the additional 350,000 new jobs, $166 billion added to U.S. GDP and $36.7 billion in government revenue. Wireless technology is revolutionizing industries and communities, report finds
CTIA SmartBrief | May 24, 2012
In a report commissioned by CTIA, BSR tracks the opportunities and challenges that wireless technology faces in health care, finance, education and community empowerment. The report, "Socioeconomic Impacts of Wireless Technology," found three themes that affect these areas: the ubiquity of wireless devices in the world, which now number almost 6 billion; remote capability, which enables socially beneficial tools, applications and services to reach people and places that were extremely difficult to reach before; and the closing of information gaps, which means the technology can collect and provide information in new and innovative ways. As 4G networks are launched across the U.S., powerful applications are being developed that harness the power of smartphones or tablet computers and are revolutionizing many parts of society.
