Prepaid sales among the top four U.S. carriers fell 12% in the third quarter from the previous period even as smaller telecoms increased their noncontract numbers 23%, according to a report from the NPD Group, a research firm. The prepaid carriers signed 70% of their subscribers away from one of the major operators, NPD reports.
