Verizon's profitable Q3 driven by more mobile-phone users

Verizon Communications rang up better-than-anticipated third-quarter numbers because it cut 4,000 workers and added 1.3 million net wireless subscribers. During its Monday earnings call, the New York-based carrier said it planned another 4,000 job cuts in the fourth quarter and the rollout of more than a dozen new wireless devices -- moves meant to ensure continued profitability.
