Study evaluates costs of diabetes care
The five-year cost of diabetes was about $26,978 per patient, not including drug expenses, and about $44,511 per patient in those older than 65 including medication costs, a study found. Diabetes costs also tend to increase when patients have worsening kidney function, proteinuria or an A1C level higher than 7.9%, researchers reported in Diabetes Care.
