EHRs have done little to contain health care costs, study finds

Hospital adoption of electronic health records has not translated into savings or enhanced efficiency in administration, says Dr. David Himmelstein, lead author of a study covering about 4,000 hospitals during four years. The study found administrative expenses rose slightly to 24.9% in 2007 from 24.4% in 2003, with facilities that computerized the fastest experiencing the biggest increase in spending.
