Are data-center companies gearing up for a format war?

Vendors in the data-center-infrastructure business have announced a flurry of partnerships lately, including a joint project involving Cisco, EMC and VMware. Software and hardware makers are trying to blend their storage, networking and computing technologies to make the data center operate "like a giant computer," Stacey Higginbotham writes. The industry could eventually become divided between two approaches that become the data-center equivalent of the "Mac vs. PC fight," she writes.
