Gene allele linked to Alzheimer's may cause early brain impairment

Researchers analyzed MRI scans of healthy adults aged 20 to 30 and found that those carrying the C-allele of the CLU gene, which appears to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, were more likely to show signs of damaged myelin, which serves as a protective layer of nerves in the brain, according to a study in the Journal of Neuroscience. The findings could pave the way for approaches to protect the brain from Alzheimer's prior to the emergence of symptoms, said the senior study author.
