Experts offer advice on dealing with EHR downtime
Hospitals should "be prepared" and "[take] all of the necessary steps in advance" to avoid the adverse effects of an unscheduled electronic health record system downtime, said Sandra Dalton, senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Other experts suggest setting up a response plan that involves the creation of an EHR downtime policy, staff training and effective communication, among other strategies.
