The Internet turns 40

The interactive, networked communications system now called the Internet, first launched Oct. 29, 1969, when a UCLA professor sent a message to another networked terminal. Forty years after its birth -- during which, incidentally, the system crashed -- the Internet is used by more than 1 billion people around the world.
