Managers can make holiday gifts for employees a lot more meaningful by understanding their staffers well enough to know what they value and by accompanying gifts with personal notes, says employee-recognition expert Cindy Ventrice. The key way they can give a present that matters: Give the workers time off. Ventrice polled workers on what they most want. "Across all ages and cultures, time off was absolutely number one," she says.
