How companies cope with the loss of iconic leaders

Apple looks likely to struggle to overcome Steve Jobs' departure. Companies such as Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Disney and Ford floundered after their founders left, struggling through years or decades of uncertainty before regaining their poise. "Most firms don't survive," says Harvard Business School professor Rakesh Khurana. "In tech in particular, it's like watching fruit flies."
