Hotelier aims high to beat the recession
Opening dozens of new hotels in the middle of a recession might sound like lunacy -- but for Frits van Paasschen, CEO of hotel giant Starwood, it's sound business strategy. Van Paasschen -- whose mantra is "refuel the cool" -- is opening 90 new hotels a year, focusing on expanding Starwood's designer-hotel brand, W. "This is a great time to open hotels," he says. "We are probably at the bottom of the cycle, and if you add fresh inventory you can enjoy the ride up."
