Regulator: Commercial real estate portfolios certain to deteriorate

While delinquencies in retail credit are easing, the nation's banks aren't going to see much good news coming from their commercial real estate loan portfolios, said John Dugan, comptroller of the currency. "We still could be in for a very rough ride," he said at the annual convention of the American Bankers Association. Government agencies have some help on the way for the lenders facing these challenges, he said. This week, the federal bank regulators will publish new advice on loan modifications for commercial mortgages, he said.
