Photos can be used as a way to engage students in history

Teachers should use historical photographs in the classroom, according to one retired educator who says primary-source materials offer more authentic lessons than textbooks. This year, Life magazine made its photo archives available online, and the Oakland Museum of California History also has an online archive available. Edutopia suggests Web sites such as the Library of Congress' American Memory as a place to find teaching tips for using photographs.
