Merit pay for Texas teachers did not lead to increase in achievement
Student achievement did not improve in Texas after the state began offering merit pay to some teachers, according to a study of the three-year effort that has since ended. Researchers say there were flaws in the program, and their conclusion is not a statement on merit-pay programs in general. However, teacher groups say they are not surprised by the findings. "You can't take a snapshot of students' performance on one day and extrapolate from that whether their teacher is highly effective over the entire school year," said Jennifer Canaday of the Association of Texas Professional Educators.
