Why professional development should be continuous
Professional development should not be limited to annual workshops and special events, writes Tom Whitby, an adjunct professor of education at St. Joseph's College in New York. Rather than leaving all training up to the teachers themselves or to complete on their own time, Whitby suggests an approach in which professional development is "evolving and continuous," and is part of the workweek for teachers and administrators. He also suggests using faculty meetings to allow teachers to collaborate.
