Retail theft on the rise
Shoplifting losses rose $1 billion last year, to $12.9 billion, according to National Retail Federation figures, as the down economy apparently spurred more stealing. With seasonal crowds come more opportunities for customer theft, which accounts for about half of all shrinkage. Stealing by employees makes up the balance, NRF says.
