U.S. life expectancy and health status lag
Americans have shorter average life expectancy than people in other wealthy nations and are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors such as consuming high-fat, high-calorie diets, according to a report released by the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine. Researchers also said the U.S. fared poorly on metrics such as infant mortality, teen pregnancy, and obesity and diabetes when compared with 16 other countries.
