California regulator declines workers'-comp rate increase
California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner did not approve a request from the Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau for a 23.7% rate hike recommendation. Insurance providers would not need any increase because employers could use specific pharmacy networks to reduce medical expenses tied to work-related injuries, he explained. Although carriers could still establish their own rates, Poizner said he hopes employers will follow his recommendation and seek better coverage options.
