Talks begin to prevent another U.S. shutdown Jan. 15
Democratic and Republican budget leaders met over breakfast only hours after President Barack Obama signed legislation that ended a 16-day shutdown of the U.S. government and avoided a debt default. Lawmakers face a tight deadline because the stopgap measure funding the government runs out Jan. 15 and an increase in the debt limit expires Feb. 7. "To all my friends in Congress, understand that how business is done in this town has to change," Obama said, appealing for an end to government by crisis.
