Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford was nominated Wednesday by President Barack Obama to replace Gen. John R. Allen as the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan. Allen has been chosen to be the next supreme allied commander in Europe. Both moves are expected to occur at the beginning of next year, pending confirmations from the Senate and NATO's North Atlantic Council.
