Night-shift ICU intensivist not always needed, study says
Critical Care SmartBrief | May 22, 2012
Hospital ICUs that have an intensivist on duty during the day do not improve patient survival rates by adding one to cover the night shift, researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. Data from 49 ICUs nationwide found hospitals that did not have an intensivist on duty during the day had a 38% lower risk of patient death by having one available at night, compared with ICUs without a day or night intensivist.
