More U.S. hospitals need to work with patient safety organizations
Up to half of hospitals with more than 50 licensed beds lack contracts with federally approved patient safety organizations. Under a provision in the health reform law, the contracts are needed to participate in health insurance exchange programs in 2015. Problems stem from a lack of information from the CMS regarding PSO regulation and the restrictive nature of PSOs, with many covering only specific safety indications. Dr. William Munier from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety said the agency is working to release information that will help hospitals choose a PSO suited to their needs.
