Research finds variable emergency procedure rates among states
A study in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery found Nevada had the highest unadjusted rate of emergency bowel surgeries at 53.6%, while Texas had the lowest rate at 2.8%. Emergency procedures tend to have higher mortality than elective surgeries, and researchers said looking more closely at the differences among states could help improve care. "If one state or region can do a procedure more safely, more cost-effectively or with better outcomes, others can learn from and emulate it," said researcher Dr. Adil Haider.
