Small stores try innovative ways to compete with big rivals

The economic downturn has prompted many consumers to rein in their spending and retailers to come up with ways to drive sales. National Retail Federation Vice President Ellen Davis says niche stores and small shops likely will face significant challenges this holiday season. Jack Parish, CEO of The Doll Hospital and Toy Soldier Shop, for example, uploaded thousands of toy photos into Google Base and found ways to explain his edge to online shoppers.
