Schapiro says SEC wants to expand authority over muni market

Mary Schapiro, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, said the agency will likely urge Congress to expand its powers to cover the municipal bond market. Schapiro, talking to reporters after giving a speech at SIFMA's Annual Meeting, said municipal issuers' level of disclosure should be equivalent, although not necessarily identical, to that of corporate issuers. Meanwhile, panelists at the conference debated the future of the market for variable-rate debt.
