Study: Nearby galaxy seized stars during collision
The Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy near the Milky Way, seized stars from a neighboring galaxy known as the Small Magellanic Cloud when they collided 300 million years ago, according to a study in the online journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Researchers discovered the phenomenon when they used gravitational microlensing to search the LMC for clues on whether massive compact halo objects are a major component of dark matter.
