Panel urges greater genome sequencing privacy protection
Whole genome sequencing offers enormous promise for enhancing medical care and is helping researchers identify the genetic causes of rare diseases, but it raises privacy issues, according to the report "Privacy and Progress in Whole Genome Sequencing," by the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. The commission recommended creating "clear policies" on who has access to whole genome data and how it can be used, as well as informing patients of the consequences and risks of sequencing.
