Soviet Lunokhod still holds record for off-planet miles
New photographs of the moon's surface reveals that, if there were an award for the farthest off-planet driving distance, the 1973 Soviet Lunokhod 2 would still hold the record, according to NASA. The mileage for Lunokhod 2 was previously recorded at 23, but new information about the rover's backtracking and other maneuvers for panoramic photos brought the mileage up to 26. NASA's Mars Opportunity rover clocked in at 23.35 miles as of Wednesday.
