Study offers clues on schizophrenia's molecular mechanism
Researchers using PET imaging have discovered that patients with schizophrenia who were not responding to antipsychotic treatment have fairly normal levels of dopamine synthesis capacity. The finding may help shed light on why dopamine-blocking antipsychotic drugs do not work in this patient group, according to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Researchers said more studies are needed to understand whether presynaptic dopamine synthesis capacity was normal in treatment-resistant patients when their condition began and whether it predates exposure to antipsychotics.
