Only half of the world's tweets are in English

An analysis of 2.8 million tweets revealed that only about half of the updates posted to Twitter are in English. Other popular languages include Japanese, Portuguese, Malay and Spanish, which collectively account for about one third of all tweets. Researchers say Twitter is likely to become increasingly multilingual as the service catches on in Asia and Latin America.
