Analysts greet Myanmar's amnesty pledge cautiously
Analysts are not raising their hopes that a pledge by the Myanmar junta to grant amnesty to political prisoners will necessarily mean that many, or any, prisoners will be freed. Observers say Myanmar authorities are looking for a way to respond positively to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's recent request that the junta release prisoners and improve its human-rights record -- without looking as if Myanmar is caving to international demands. Democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi is unlikely to be among those prisoners freed.
