Ukraine on the verge of bankruptcy
Although Ukraine is experiencing no business interruptions and only sporadic protests, the nation is nevertheless for all intents and purposes bankrupt -- a situation that might become painfully clear as early as Saturday, when Ukraine must pay its gas bills to Russia. Should Ukraine manage to make this installment, it must make another payment in April before the worst of winter is over. Ukraine still is awaiting a decision by the International Monetary Fund as to whether it will extend an agreed-to line of credit after the first deposit virtually disappeared with no accounting as to its use.
