Saudis get tough on polio battle
Saudi authorities will require anyone making the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in November to swallow an oral vaccine for polio in front of health officials to prevent any outbreaks among the throngs of pilgrims from around the world. The move is important because of widespread conspiracy theories in the Muslim world that vaccination is some kind of Western plot designed to sterilize girls. The decision comes amid the announcement by Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, announced with UN Foundation chairman Ted Turner, that Saudi Arabia would make a $30 million donation toward the fight against polio.
