Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri is the dominant mobile phone operator in Turkey. It introduced wireless service to Turkey in 1994, and now has more than 35 million subscribers. Turkcell operates a digital GSM (global system for mobile communications) network throughout Turkey. Founding investors in Turkcell include conglomerate Çukurova Group, Russian conglomerate Alfa Group (via its Altimo unit), and Finnish telecom services provider TeliaSonera. A holding company controlled by Alfa and Çukurova owns 51% of Turkcell. TeliaSonera controls another 13%.
