WARN law can add complexity to layoffs
About 700 former employees of DJSP Enterprises in Florida are awaiting a federal judge's approval of a settlement regarding layoffs that they allege violated the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The proposed settlement calls for the employees to get $325,000 in back wages. Employers sometimes avoid having to issue WARN notices by laying off employees in small groups instead of all at once, experts say.
