White Knoll Middle School students in Columbia, S.C., paid back a 134-year old debt to the New York City firefighters when they decided to raise money -- aided by the state's businesses and top donors -- to buy a new firetruck for New York City. In 1867, the New York Fireman's Association gave the city of Columbia a hose carriage to help it recover from Union troops burning the city and its fire station to the ground.
