Non-profit Bookshare.org puts scanned books online and allows visually impaired readers to download them, much as other file-sharing Web sites do with music files. Bookshare, which requires a certificate of disability and charges a subscription fee, has 3,000 books in its collection and is expected to grow by 2,000 books a month for the next few months. Because it serves the disabled, Bookshare can skirt copyright fees, reports say.
