Pathmark and Stop & Shop plan to purchase bankrupt Big V Super Markets of Florida, N.Y. Stop & Shop is to buy 26 stores; Pathmark intends to pay $71 million, plus a sum for inventory for nine of the 26 stores, company officials said.

Tesco, a U.K. grocery chain, has a successful shopping service that allows customers to order and purchase groceries online, then pick them up -- already bagged -- at the actual store.
The European Union has proposed a legislation that would put an end to retailers selling food staples at everyday low prices or buy-one-get-one-free promotions. The proposed plan could pose problems for such retailers as Wal-Mart's Asda and Tesco, which have used deep discount strategies to lure consumers. Analysts say while the plan would help suppliers, consumers are bound to feel the price pinch.
Supervalu plans to implement McHugh Software International's advanced labor management system to enhance performance and improve employee productivity at its 30 U.S. distribution centers. "We believe that optimizing our distribution methods and labor practices across our network will enable us to better serve our customers through faster cycle times and improved order accuracy, while also reducing our cost structure," a Supervalu official says.
