The core CPI rate rose 0.1% in August, but prices for consumer goods overall were up 0.3% after energy prices spiked up 2.7%. Experts had predicted a 0.2% gain in the core rate, not accounting for food and energy prices, and a 0.4% overall increase.
The West Des Moines, Iowa-based supermarket says prices for irradiated ground beef are slightly higher than regular beef. A Hy-Vee spokeswoman said prices are expected to drop when demand and production increase.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals reportedly has sent a letter to Kroger threatening a boycott if the grocer does not adopt food guidelines to be released next month. The standards call for better inspections of slaughterhouses, increased space for laying hens, guidelines verifying animal handling and refusals to deal with suppliers who mistreat animals.
