Jewel-Osco has named Shane Sampson as its new president. Sampson previously served as president of Jewel-Osco parent New Albertson's Boston-based Shaw's division. Jewel-Osco has also added five more former Dominick's locations in the Chicago area, bringing the retailer's number of Dominick's store purchases to nine.
Wal-Mart Stores says it expects to enter the California grocery market within four to six years. The company has plans to open as many as 40 supercenters, which would employ 200 to 600 workers in each store.
Albertson's yesterday announced plans to auction four closed Jewel-Osco stores in the Chicago area. The company said it would sell or close 116 stores in Tennessee and Texas. The savings are intended to help Albertson's compete with such supercenters as Wal-Mart by marketing fresh produce and expanding albertsons.com.
