The grocery chain recently standardized its new Web-based HR software. The system, Workbrain's RetailERM, tracks work shifts, personnel changes, leave requests and self-serve functions for Winn-Dixie's more than 11,000 employees.
Some Democratic senators are advancing legislation to extend unemployment benefits by six months in states with high unemployment. Alaska, Washington and Oregon have some of the highest unemployment rates in the country; as many as half of Washington's 200,000 unemployed could run out of benefits by December.
Convincing U.S. consumers to accept irradiated food has been an obstacle for the food industry, according to health experts. While the FDA has allowed beef, pork, poultry, spices and produce to be irradiated, consumers still steer clear of the process. Consumer researchers say learning more about the technology could help widen food irradiation acceptance.
Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, has inserted a provision into the U.S. Senate farm bill asking for a redefinition of irradiated meat. Under the proposal, the meat would be called pasteurized beef. The FDA and Agriculture Department have not ruled on a distinction between irradiation and pasteurization.
