A proposal to create a charter school for preschool students with special needs in Florida's Santa Rosa County has won approval from the local school board. The Capstone Academy Milton Charter School will serve as many as 30 preschool students who have disabilities, with a focus on early intervention. It will also provide after-school and summer-school programs for students up to age 18 who have special needs, as well as summer camps and extended day camps for older students.
In an attempt to keep their students' attention during class, instructors at all levels sometimes incorporate an unexpected change into their lectures. Some teachers stand on desks to teach, while others show family videos to give students a chance to take a break from the lecture.
The card allows students to pay for their school lunches and check out books more conveniently. School administrators say the smart cards also help with alleviate the stigma associated with subsidized lunches.
The popularity of afterschool education has increased in recent years as growing evidence shows afterschool programs can have significant academic and social benefits. Good programs supplement material students learn in school with skills training and recreational activities.
The California Federation of Teachers today was expected to announce its opposition to Proposition 49, a ballot initiative sponsored by Arnold Schwarzenegger that would expand after-school programs. The unions says the plan would tie up education funds.
