Campbell Soup plans to use a cold-blend process that won't overcook the soup's ingredients. The company is hoping the process increases sales of ready-to-serve and condensed soups, its biggest money maker.
Michael J. Jobes, vice president of Philadelphia's S. Walter Packaging, says a change in packaging can provide a company with a cheap, fast facelift. The packaging firm has national clients, including retailers Coach and Talbots, and sells a range of products from tissue paper to gift wrap.
The USDA's Inspector General's office is looking at whether federal meat inspectors can ensure safe food. A separate investigation by the General Accounting Office is reviewing the USDA enforcement of food safety rules at meat packing plants.
