To improve speed and reduce costs, six McDonald's restaurants in Colorado Springs, Colo., are having customers place orders through a tabletop telephone to employees at a centralized call center who electronically relay the orders to the appropriate kitchen. The process may also increase sales if workers handling the calls urge customers to order more. The locations also feature Zoom-throughs, a type of drive-through where customers who know what they want to order can bypass the regular menu line, order quickly and swipe a credit card to pay.
