In an attempt to break Fresh Del Monte Produce's hold on worldwide pineapple sales, other companies, including Chiquita Brands and Dole Food, are planting thousands of acres of pineapples in Central America. They are hoping to breed their own versions of Fresh Del Monte's "Extra Sweet Gold" pineapple, which has earned the company hundreds of millions of dollars since its introduction in the mid-1990s.
