The New York City school system is abandoning a newly adopted balanced literacy approach in 49 of its struggling elementary schools in favor of a more traditional reading curriculum. By doing so, officials hope to receive $34 million in Reading First federal aid awarded only if the city uses "scientifically proven" reading programs approved by New York state and the U.S. Department of Education.
