A four month strike in Southern California, a New England strike averted this weekend and pending negotiations over a Washington, D.C., grocery labor contract show the forces that may be reshaping the supermarket industry. Washington's major grocery chains -- Giant and Safeway -- say they need to cut back on health care costs in order to compete with Wal-Mart and other discounters, but union officials say the Wal-Mart threat is overstated.
