Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin yesterday introduced a bill before the National Assembly that would ban religious symbols, such as Muslim headscarves, Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses, in schools. The law would not apply to private schools or French schools abroad. Raffarin reiterated France's secular credo, saying French citizens should observe the "religion of France."
